Director Keith Undercash had a bachelor's degree in engineering from NC State University and had spent most of his years at the agency working in the Mooresville field office. Supervisor Steve Mazda, who Harry had described as one of the most talented field office bosses in the agency, had a masters degree in science from NC State and had worked in the Raleigh field office before his promotion to Supervisor of the Fayetteville office.
Dr. Daniel vanderRush, the lead engineer in the agency's Division of Air Quality, held a PhD in chemical engineering, including a master's degree in chemical engineering from NC State University as well as a chemistry degree from UNC Chapel Hill. He had started working at the environmental agency in the 1990s before leaving for a brief stint with Carolina Power and Light, but then returning to the agency in the late 1990s.
